Kelly & Shiel EST. 1859

Kelly & Shiel has had a long history within the Carlton area and surrounds since 1859, with the companies beginning as William Ievers & Sons.

William Ievers (1818-1901), an Irish estate agent came to Melbourne in 1855, and started the business in 1859 in Cardigan Street.

Ievers a city councillor from 1895-190, is now remembered with a memorial drinking fountain located across from the Kelly & Shiel’s offices now at Argyle Place, Carlton.

His son’s William Ievers (jnr) and George Hawkins Ievers both worked for the company and were councillors. William Ievers’ (jnr) memorial drinking fountain is located in Macarthur Square and Rathdowne Street in Carlton and George Hawkins Ievers statue is at the corner of Gatehouse Street and the Avenue, Parkville.

The three memorial fountains were donated for the community in thanks for its support

Damien Shiel the principal took over the business in 1987, and has ever since led the company in good trustworthy possession.

Damien’s real estate career started in 1975, with Blackburn & Lockwood, in the Brunswick office, working in the rental department and was involved in some sales activity.

Damien, became a Licensed Estate Agent in 1980 & commenced employment at Brian and Howard Kelly in 1981, & became a partner with Mr Howard Kelly in July 1983. Upon Mr Kelly’s retirement in 1987, Mr Shiel became Sole Proprietor.

Due to Damien’s experience of 37 years he is constantly contacted by other estate agents as an information source for the Melbourne area and more specifically Carlton.

The Company specialises in property management with many residential and commercial properties in the Inner city fringe suburbs, particularly Carlton, Fitzroy, Parkville & Brunswick.
